Giuseppe B. Portale was born in Biancavilla (Catania) on May 16th 1938. He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan in 1961 with honours and special mention. From 1 November 1961 to 31 October 1970, he was assistant professor of Commercial Law at the above-mentioned Faculty of Law. In 1963 and 1964, he attended the Juristische Fakultät der Universität Heidelberg, thanks to a scholarship from the Deutscher Akademischer Ausstauschdienst.

Since 1979, he had been full professor of Commercial Law at the Faculty of Law of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. In November 2010, he retired and in July 2011 he was awarded the title of professor emeritus. He is a regular guest of the Institut für ausländisches und internationales Privat-und Wirtschaftsrecht of the University of Heidelberg for study and research stays. He founded and has edited the main journals and series on commercial, corporate and civil law and is a member of their scientific committees.

Trained at the school of important Italian Masters of Civil Law and Commercial Law, he has been closely involved with the main schools in other countries dealing with Corporate Law, Banking Law and Comparative Private and Commercial Law. In 2007 he was awarded an honorary degree by the Juristische Fakultät der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg “for his scientific merits in the field of commercial and corporate law and for promoting and supporting scientific exchange between Germany and Italy”.

In 2016, he founded, together with Luca Purpura, Portale Purpura Studio Legale Associato.

On 26 July 2022 he was elected by the Accademia dei Lincei as a National Member of the Class of Moral, Historical and Philological Sciences (Cat. VI – Legal Sciences).
